JSOG Statement

Calling for an immediate end of the conflict jeopardizing lives of women and their families in Ukraine

The invasion of Ukraine is depriving women and their families of their health, rights and happiness. Babies will be born without selecting the right time and place. Instead of lying in safe and clean hospital beds, pregnant women will deliver their babies in dusty basement shelters, subway stations or, even worse, cold groves under aerial bombardment. Some will need c-sections. Even after safe deliveries, who can ensure their lives tomorrow? You will probably be able to imagine the serious mental impact both on mothers and children who are fleeing from the horrible exposure to bombing, which will haunt all their later lives. Although it tends to be ignored, continued poor sanitary conditions will threaten safe and healthy lives of women and girls who have been already thrown into the unendurable environments.
Medical and humanitarian aid for the victims is critically needed. As a professional organization to protect women’s health, we, Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, have been working and making our utmost efforts for well-being of women and girls not only in Japan but all over the world. We sincerely offer our support for the people in need and strongly call for an immediate end of the conflict in Ukraine.
